ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT: Harry Schnirring, Director of Plumbing
and Fire Protection Engineering

Harry Schnirring is a licensed professional engineer in several states and countries including several specifically as a Civil Engineer. He also holds a CIPE (Certified in Plumbing Engineering) from the original testing in 1983 and now holds the newer CPD designation. He has been a member of ASPE, NFPA and ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) for over 30 years and is currently a member of IAPMO. He is also past President of the Atlanta Chapter of ASPE. Harry was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised with seven younger brothers and sisters. He received an Associate Degree in Architectural Technology, from the Ohio College of Applied Science and a Bachelor Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He worked for Hixson Architects and Engineers in Cincinnati for 14 years before moving to Atlanta in 1984. At Hixson he worked in plumbing, fire protection and civil engineering on many varied projects throughout the states. Much of the work centered on food processing projects, primarily for the Kroger Co. Projects included dairies, ice cream plants, meat packing plants, bakeries, warehousing and major distribution centers.

Upon moving with his family to Atlanta, he worked at Lockwood Greene Engineers for a year before meeting Bill Thompson. Soon after meeting Bill he started at W L Thompson Consulting Engineers Inc. in September, 1985, and has been there ever since. W L Thompson Consulting Engineers was formed in July, 1977 by Bill Thompson. Located at 50 Technology Parkway South in Peachtree Corners, GA, they are primarily a mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering consulting firm that also specializes in civil engineering, water feature design and technology systems. Corp changed to Thompson Company in 2002 and recently combined with Brady and Anglin in 2015. They have additional offices in Houston, Tortola, BVI and Dubai, UAE. Thompson Co has been known throughout the country, primarily for their expertise in hotel, resort and mixed use facility technical knowledge and experience. These projects have been located throughout the US, Mexico, Latin America, South America, Caribbean, Asia, Middle East and Egypt, and have been done in association with the leading architects in the country. Most of the Ritz Carltons throughout the world have had Thompson Co involvement. In addition, there were many other varied projects such as federal, state and county correctional facilities, commercial aviation facilities, terminals and refueling facilities, including the new International Terminal F at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Many military aviation facilities for the Corp of Engineers and NAVFAC were done throughout the states, including hangers for B-52's, KC-10, KC-135, C-130, C-17, C-141, F-14, 15 and 18's and P-3 Orions. High rise office buildings, apartment, educational institutions, regional shopping centers, convention centers including the Georgia World Congress Center, have had his input. In accomplishing these varied projects, technological expertise was developed in sanitary, process and chemical waste systems, wastewater treatment, graywater, storm water collection, detention, reclaimed water storage, including large siphonic storm drainage systems, potable water storage, treatment and pumping systems,, non- potable collection and storage, pumping and distribution systems, natural gas and propane storage and distribution systems, fuel oil and gasoline storage, irrigation systems, compressed air, vacuum, medical and laboratory gases, steam and condensate, vacuum, fire pumps and storage tanks, sprinkler and standpipe systems, AFFF, deluge and pre-action, clean agent systems, hydraulic calcs, site planning, layout and development, grading and drainage, detention and retention basins, roadway design, erosion control and utility distribution systems. While at Thompson, Harry has been a Principle, Project Manager and Director of Project Management, Director of Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering and Director of Civil and Water Feature Engineering.

At times juggling several at the same time. In a recent interview with Mr. Schnirring, he stated, "The type and location of the varied projects, and the challenges that they all have presented, have been the most compelling reason that I stayed at Thompson all this time. The opportunities presented here cannot be found anywhere else."

Harry has recently retired from Thompson Ehle Company as of September 15, 2016. However, he will continue to work part time, as the challenges that are still present are hard to ignore. Mr. Schnirring has been married to his beautiful wife, Mary, who sometimes attends the ASPE meetings and conventions, since 1968. They have lived in Norcross since moving to the Atlanta area and have been members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church since that time. They have four daughters, who now have families of their own, along with six precious grandchildren. He is also a member of the St. Patrick's Knights of Columbus and St Vincent de Paul Society.
