IN MEMORIAM: Sheldon LeGrande Morgan

I regret to inform you of the sudden passing of Sheldon LeGrande Morgan, 87, Friday, February 10, 2017. He was born in Thomasville, AL, October 9, 1929, the son of Stevy and Floy Brasell Morgan and grew up in Pine Hill, AL. Having first married Clara Leon Autry, his second marriage was to Joyce Hardwick of Dadeville, whom he met while graduate students at Auburn University. Joyce died in 1994. He is survived by his wife Anne, daughters, Ann Andrews (Edsel), Jane Odom (Ralph); sons, Sheldon Miller (Sandra), Jack Hardwick Morgan and Steven LeGrande Morgan; step-sons; Edward Lee Freeland, Jr. (Ann), Robert Jackson Freeland (Lynn), grandchildren; Morgan Andrews Yordy (John), Edsel Aldreidge Andrews Jr., Sarah Odom Huskey (Joseph), William Seth Odom (Brittany), Tara Miller, Jesse Miller, Robert Jackson Freeland, Jr., William Leslie Mathis Freeland, Mary Margaret Freeland and 10 great-grandchildren; Savannah Jane, Annabella Joyce and Mary Amelia Huskey, Rebekah Mae, William Jonathan and Cana Glory Odom, John Ronald Yordy, III, Curtis LeGrandeYordy, Causey Louise Yordy, Edsel Aldriedge Andrews, III, Louise Elizabeth Andrews; brother, Chester M. Morgan (Patricia) and sister, Marilyn McPherson-Jones (Edmond) , many nephews and nieces. Sheldon served in the U. S. Air Force (1948-52), graduated from Auburn University with Bachelor and Masters degrees, and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University. After graduating from Auburn, he joined the Alabama State Docks in Public Relations and Advertising. He was manager of Port and Economic development activities for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce 1961-1972. While at the Chamber, he managed the efforts to acquire and develop the Theodore Industrial Park and the conversion of Brookley AFB from military to civilian use. He joined the Merchants National Bank (Regions) in 1972. After retiring in 1995 as Senior Vice President, he served as President of the Warrior Tombigbee Waterway Association until he retired in 2008. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Mobile and on Boards of the Mobile Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, the United Way and many other local civic organizations. He served on three Advisory Councils of Auburn University and National Alumni Board of Directors. Sheldon was a professional economic developer, having founded the Economic Development Council of Alabama in 1968. He was Chairman of the National Waterways Council in 1978-1989. He received the National Achievement Award from The National Rivers Hall of Fame, the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts and The Meritorious Public Service Award from the United States Coast Guard in 2008. Sheldon co-authored "A Family History Morgans of Wilcox and Clarke Counties, Alabama". Funeral Services were held at St. James Episcopal Church, 860 N. Section Street, Fairhope, AL on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 and began at 10:00 a.m. The reception was held immediately following the services at the church. Interment was held at Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile, AL at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to Auburn University, Sheldon LeGrande Morgan Annual Scholarship in the School of Nursing, Miller Hall, Auburn, AL 36849.
